Think Spring — Clean Up and Then Get in the Dirt
You may have missed the Seed Starting Workshop and Seed Swap at the Public Library for Union County which the Lewisburg Community Garden sponsored last month.  At the time it was rather hard to believe it really was that time of year.  But the Community Garden Board is making plans and planting seeds.  You too can get to work on summery, soil-centered activities.  Plot rental applications are due by April 16 (disregard any earlier deadline notices). The April program on Container Gardening is coming up next week on Thursday, April 17, at 7pm at the Public Library for Union County.  And they have an ongoing series which is noted on the LNC calendar and posted on their website here.

sunflowerFor those not familiar with the concept, the Community Garden is a site along N Water St just south of St Anthony -- in the North Ward Neighborhood -- which has been developed in cooperation with Bucknell University and Lewisburg Borough as a shared garden space.  Half of the garden is devoted to growing produce for donation to the Community Harvest weekly meal in Milton and the other half to small plots available for people to rent.  Anyone can rent a plot.  If more applications are received than plots available, there will be a lottery to determine awards.  If you don't have a good sunny spot, or need your yard space for other stuff, or have no yard at all, this may be the solution to your gardening needs.

The garden also works with camps over the summer and has offered educational programs and fun activities, ranging from a Zombie Run to a Locavore Dinner to a Harvest Festival.

If you're interested in this program, consider getting involved.  Even if you don't need to rent a plot, you could help staff the plant sale or assist with lots of other events and activities through the season.  Contact Stacey Sommerfield for more information:  sns004@bucknell.edu or 570.577.3928.
