PresMonth2014_inspireAs part of Preservation Month, the Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB) for Lewisburg Borough, in cooperation with the Lewisburg Neighborhoods Corporation, will present a program on historic preservation, the HARB ordinance, and the reconciled historic district map for the Borough next month.  The Board would like to invite the public to attend on Wednesday, May 7th, at 7 PM, at the Area Agency on Aging/Senior Center at 116 North 2nd St in Lewisburg.  The meeting will include a review of what historic preservation is and why it is important, with reference to the Federal Secretary of the Interior’s official standards.  In addition, several members of the HARB will be present to go over which topics covered by the ordinance and which are not, as well as show samples of materials which conform to historic standards.

Historic_differencesThere are currently two maps of the historic district for the borough, one generated as part of the federal historic district designation and the other as part of the local ordinance.  In addition, maps of structures considered to “contribute” to the historic fabric change over time, as the 50 year old cut-off date moves ahead in time and captures more buildings year by year.  One purpose of the meeting will be to review the two maps with the public in anticipation of the Borough incorporating the state-defined boundary into the local ordinance as the new official map (which will itself be subject to review again in the future).  A larger version of the map as well as a variety of additional background docs and links on historic preservation are posted on the Gallery/Documents page of this website.

The program is free and open to the general public – really anyone with an interest in preservation and development/redevelopment within core communities.  It is nevertheless expected to be of greatest interest to residents and property owners in the Borough.
