Spring is in the air.  The snow is showing up less frequently.  As the snow melts, we can see the ground again – and along with it, unfortunately, a fair amount of trash that had also been hidden by that white stuff.  The Lewisburg Neighborhoods Corporation and the Lewisburg River Town Team will be holding a spring cleanup along Bull Run Creek.  This will take place on Saturday, April 7, from 2 to 4pm.  In the event of thunder or serious rain – or the ground being covered by snow -- we'll have a raindate on Saturday, April 14, from 2 to 4pm.  If it is merely drizzling, the cleanup will continue as scheduled.

This event will be part of the Great American Clean Up which focuses on removing trash from public spaces and rights of way across the state and around the country.  The River Town Team cleanup will be focusing on stream and river bank areas in an effort to keep litter from continuing its journey downstream and reducing the waste burden of the Susquehanna.  Volunteers will be directed to pick up trash along Bull Run within Hufnagle Park as well as upstream toward Danny Green Field and downstream toward the river.

Time to show Bull Run Creek (Limestone Run) some love!

During clean ups conducted in the community last year, volunteers scoured the creeks, stream banks, the RR corridor (only after obtaining explicit permission and approvals), and even the riverbed in Lewisburg.  This early spring outing will not involve any dunking like the In River Cleanup from last August.  Instead we will take advantage on land of the window of opportunity between when the snow melts and the plants start to leaf out.  It will be the perfect time to extract litter that has lodged itself in the underbrush.

Community members of all ages (children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult) are invited to volunteer their time for the afternoon and help keep our town, our waterways, and our world clean.  People wishing to participate should report to the Kidsburg playground in Hufnagle Park at 2pm on Saturday, April 7.  Participants will be provided with equipment and directions at that point.  The total area covered will depend on the number of volunteers available.

Participants should dress for the weather and the activity.  Long pants and long sleeves will protect from thorns and rough underbrush.  Avoid wearing knits which catch burrs and thorns.  And consider pulling back or covering long hair to protect it as well.  Sturdy footwear is recommended.  We will have gloves, bags, and some grabbers, but participants are also welcome to bring their own.  Even with the still cool weather, consider bringing a water bottle and wearing sunscreen.
