Do you currently ride a bike in the Lewisburg area or would you like to "if only..."? Walk It! Bike It! Lewisburg wants to hear from you! Take the bike survey: bit.ly/WIBIsurvey2019 When originally announced this spring, the survey was only open to people over 18, but now anyone 10 and up can complete it.
A decade ago, the Lewisburg Borough Traffic Advisory Committee conducted a survey of people who bike and people who would like to bike in the Lewisburg area. In the intervening years…
- the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail has come on line,
- the Penn House Commons development has gone in,
- the Lewisburg Area High School has moved out of town, and
- bike culture has changed and evolved.
In addition, the Traffic Committee and the East Buffalo Bike Ped Committee have ceased to operate and Walk It! Bike It! Lewisburg has come into existence, looking to address issues beyond individual municipal confines.
You can look at the results from the earlier survey in this summary (2006 bike demand summary2) and this compilation (2006 bike survey compilation).
You can also now take the new survey! It is now available in both online and hardcopy formats. Admittedly it took us about 2 years from when we started the process of reviewing and revising the old form. We've refined the questions based on both the input the first time around, group outreach in recent years, and changes to the community/society. And we joined forces with a group of Bucknell students in the Environmental Studies 411 capstone course who helped to bring it into the 20-teens in an online format.
Hardcopy is also available at the Borough Building (55 S 5th Street), Earl's Bicycle Store, and at the Public Library for Union County (255 Reitz Blvd). You can get a printable version by emailing us at elmstreet [at] windstream.net. Completed hardcopy questionnaires can be dropped off at Earl's or mailed to the Borough Office or scanned and emailed to the above address.
We had also encouraged people earlier in the year to participate in the State Surface Transportation Commission survey. Results from that are now available here.
If you want some references on the work WIBI has been doing to zero in on issue locations in our area, check out the updated Improvements Priority list on this page.
We plan to close out this version of the survey by the end of the summer and report out the results. Next steps include developing a survey of driver attitudes towards bikes and peds as well as a Walk Survey. It would be really great to get some way of assessing what percentage of the total population walks and/or bikes. Geisinger is currently conducting a survey about outdoor activity in the region and perhaps their version will help us pin that down.
