What’s Going On?
The short answer to that question is "a lot." The Bull Run Neighborhood is in the middle of a Flood Mitigation Project that demolished three buildings along the creek side of S 6th St last month and will also bring down six more properties during the summer of 2014.  As advertised in public notices and public meetings last month, the neighborhood is also applying for a Public Improvement Grant through DCED for the S 6th St - Phase I Project which runs along St Louis St from S 6th to Hawn Alley.  The Hufnagle Gift Card project has both raised…
What’s Up?
What is up?  And how do you find out about it?  While keeping an eye on this space may work for some who want to find out what's going on in the community, for many email and websites are hard to access.  The LNC is considering joining the CommUnity Zone as a patron in order to share regularly in the print newsletter they create and distribute.  For now the LNC manages to maintain an adequate online presence and has instituted regular email updates, but implementing a monthly print newsletter is costly in terms of both time and money.  Joining forces with…
Whither Huck Finn?
How do you instill love of the earth and a conservation ethic in children?  More and more research is pointing to kids’ need for free play and exploration in a natural setting to develop a long-lasting personal affinity for nature.  More specifically, it seems that children need frequent, spontaneous, unscheduled, unscripted, self-directed opportunities to play in nature to really get it.  There are other factors that promote love of nature, including, in order of diminishing effectiveness, mentors or parents modeling favorable attitudes, participation in outdoor groups like scouts, negative environmental experiences (e.g. the loss of a favorite play site to…
