Lewisburg is clearly a river town. It should be evident to the casual observer that it is a town directly on the Susquehanna River. And yet... do we have any events really focused on the river? Do we have high profile, well developed, and much used riverfront parks, open space and river access points? Are area residents really keyed into what is happening with and on the river on a consistent basis? Will the notable exception of the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership's Polar Bear Plunge event, not really.
But that is going to change. A week from Saturday, on March 29, from 11am to 3pm, there will be a first-time community block party on N 5th St at the William Cameron Engine Company. The goal of the event is education and celebration. There will be informational tables about water issues and fire safety, as well as fun activities, music and free food. The event will be held rain or shine. (In case of rain, festivities will move indoors to the WCEC training facility.) Anyone who has a stake in Lewisburg becoming more fully a river town is invited. Come find out how to get involved in the Lewisburg River Town Team which is just forming now. Come Celebrate the Susquehanna!
In addition, you are invited to help out with Riverbank Clean Ups scheduled for Sunday, April 6, from 1 to 4pm, and Sunday, April 13, from 11am to 2pm (rain date for April 6 is Wednesday, April 9, from 4 to 6:30pm). On both dates, volunteers should convene at the elevated open space adjacent to the St George St boat ramp at 2pm to get supplies and directions. Participants should wear boots, long pants, and long sleeves. Try to avoid fleece or knits which will catch thorns and burrs. Consider some kind of head covering. Some gloves will be available, but participants may also want to bring their own work gloves and grabbers.
