The Elm Street Program's elemental committees include one called "Neighbors and Economy."  It is one of the more easily misunderstood aspects of the program.  The idea is that residential resiliency is intimately tied to the local economy.  There are key interdependencies between jobs, businesses, home values, and neighborhood viability.  As the North Ward Neighborhood Committee is just getting started, there isn't a specific campaign in place yet, but we are seeing the need for action all around us. Catherman's Homemade Candy, which produces candy, cakes, pastries, cookies and bread, is one of the neighborhood amenities that was specifically called out…
What's up in the neighborhood? In the Bull Run Neighborhood, the coming week will see a Cemetery Clean Up on Wednesday, Nov 13, from 11am to 1pm. In the North Ward, there will be a Contra Dance at the Donald Heiter Community Center this Saturday evening, the 9th, from 7:30 to 10:30pm.  It's $8, less for students.  All are welcome, no experience necessary.  There will be live music and instruction for each dance as you go along.  Come give it a try.  For more information, contact Countryside Contra from the web or look for their group on facebook. Stay tuned…
Pennsylvania has been battling the encroaching Emerald Ash Borer infestation for several years now.  Anyone who has camped in a PA State Park is familiar with the restrictions imposed by DCNR on the movement of firewood which have been part of the control protocol.  But that battle is essentially lost.  The ash borer is here and soon many of the ash trees won't be. What can be done?  It is important to get a sense of the total number of trees in the area.  The Lewisburg Borough Shade Tree Commission has been conducting a study specifically of ash trees in…
Preservation is not just a means of preserving the integrity of the built environment -- it can also be a driver for the local economy and a sound business option.  Window reconstruction is a thorny issue for many, first raised when the vinyl window fad blew through.  In the intervening years, the poor performance and short lifespan of the vinyl products have become evident.  And it has become clear that rehabilitating existing historic windows is often the best and most durable option.  It is often the most efficient choice from an energy standpoint.  The links go to the window preservation…
Lewisburg's own -- actually the Bull Run Neighborhood's own -- Marjorie Priceman, children's book author and illustrator extraordinaire, is generously donating proceeds from the sale of packs of the Christmas cards she created last year to the Bull Run Neighborhood Committee.  The cards depict a winter scene in Hufnagle Park with the Christmas tree front and center.  The Borough Building, the gazebo and neighborhood houses are visible in the background.  Wreathed streetlights stand in the foreground. The cards made their debut in packs this fall at the Bull Run Neighborhood Booth at the Woolly Worm Festival.  Attendees wound up making…
In October of 2012, the Woolly Worms were out in force in Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg, PA for the annual Woolly Worm Festival put on by the Buffalo Valley AM Kiwanis Club.  The creatures were nudged and prodded, measured and inspected by a keen panel of local prognosticators.  Upon consideration, the team made a prediction of a bad winter coming up.  In February 2013, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring – however, our Woolly Worms showed their usual accuracy, as the past winter just didn’t want to quit. And now it's that time again.  Come one, come all to Hufnagle…
