A new collaborative art project is afoot here in Lewisburg. Consider it a complement to the fantastic work Jim Reid and Bob Albin are doing for the new "Art Alley," aka Cherry Alley. Eyes have turned to another area with man-made surfaces begging for adornment, specifically the concrete piers between the creek and the in-town section of the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail. These are some of the most prominent industrial ruins in the area, the concrete supports that used to carry railroad sidings accessing the coal yards.  The piers have attracted the attention of local artists and thinkers and planners and dreamers.  Seeing…
It's that time of year again!  We're planning for another Winter Cross-Trail Challenge in 2021. The goal is to journey along the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail mid-winter by any (safe and legal) means possible. That means, regardless of the ground conditions or weather that day, make some tracks. It could be a walk in the park... or in a blizzard.  Choose your method of locomotion -- bike, boots, skis, snowshoes...  Traction aids may be advisable.    As a reminder, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail.   Last year, it was sunny and in the 70s and a passel…
We know what to do: wear a mask, wash our hands, keep our distance, avoid indoor gathering, isolate if positive, exposed, or symptomatic, and get the vaccine when you get your chance. Case numbers and hospitalizations have been dropping recently, but they are still as high as they were in mid November in our area, when the winter surge really took off. Factor in the impact of the new variants which are more contagious, and then we realize how mitigation is even more urgent during the next few months as we work through the long process of getting enough people…
It's late January 2021.  You may be asking yourself what is going on. Well, things are pretty intense right now.  Tensions are running high.  As is confusion. Lemme ‘splain. The vaccine rollout landscape shifted on January 19 when the previous administration recommended states add everyone over 65, plus younger people with significant COVID risk, to their priority vaccination tiers.  In PA, that meant expanding Phase 1A beyond healthcare workers and nursing home residents and employees (not all of whom had or have yet been vaccinated) to include an additional 3.5M people.  1A had been a little under 1M to start…
TL;DR (too long; didn't read) Summary: Cloth masks are good for protecting others from the wearer; not as good at protecting the wearer from others"My mask protects you; your mask protects me" does not work if too few people are willing to wear masksWe need 80% mask wearing and are nationally under 50%, with lots of transmissionSince so many people are not wearing masks when they need to, those who are wearing masks need better protection for themselves -- look for multiple layers, high filtration, and tight fit (double masking can help with all of those)The new variants are more…
People have questions right now and have been wondering why we have not posted much about vaccinations, schools returning in person, the new COVID variants, or local stats.  There is a lot of uncertainty right now on all of those counts and we have all along tried to only provide information when we could be clear about it.  There just hasn’t been that much definitive info to focus on but that is starting to change.  So here is an initial round of reference sites and resources as we move into this next critical stage of our quest to bring the…
