We're once again inviting the community to Picture the Piers.  We have been getting people to focus on the Piers in recent months.  As a follow up to the Spring Equinox event where we did a little sketching at sunset, we are inviting everyone to come out and join us for a community chalk event as part of the two weeks of the Celebration of the Arts in late April and early May.  Rather than just taking a half hour to noodle on the concrete, we'll be out there from 1 to 4pm, weather permitting, on Saturday, April 24.  (The…
Where to start? The race between injections and infections is well and truly on. Each vaccination is a personal triumph, but we can't declare victory until the community is vaccinated -- that means about 80% with immunity (we're not sure the precise number yet and in fact it can change, depending on other factors like variants and individual behavior). Pennsylvania has not opened up vaccination to as wide a range of people as some other states yet which has some people very upset but on the other hand could be read as a positive since other states aren't that much…
Two recent versions of the vaccine dispatches provided by Barbara Hemmendinger of the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition are shared below. In addition, it should be noted that we are _still_ in Phase 1A. We are further along in that phase and some additional people have been moved up in the queue, specifically K-12 educators (and other school staff, like administrators, bus drivers, etc). But the expansion does NOT apply to higher education (ahem, Bucknell!), though that group is expected to be included in Phase 1B which we hope starts soon. You may be asking who IS currently eligible? Why,…
Cleanups with masks!  We ask that participants wear masks when at the meeting locations and any time they are in proximity to others, plus we acknowledge that this year there will be a new segment of the waste stream:  discarded face masks... We had to cancel most of our cleanups last year in response to the pandemic.  But those are the kinds of small group, outdoor activities that look quite feasible this year.  We invite people to join us this year for any or all of these upcoming opportunities: Lewisburg Community Cleanup -- Saturday, April 3, from 1:30 to 3:30pm…
On March 1 Pennsylvania announced the further loosening of many COVID restrictions, including eliminating the requirement to quarantine if traveling from out of state. It should be noted that this is still not a complete rescinding of all restrictions and OF COURSE everyone should still be wearing masks, distancing, washing hands, and avoiding (unmasked) indoor gatherings. In fact, given the context of dropping, but still high transmission rates, still quite limited vaccine coverage, and increasing threat of easily transmissible variants, we should be looking ahead with a mix of both optimism and caution and doing what we can to ensure…
Barbara Hemmendinger from the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition (LCHIC) has been providing regular vaccine dispatches. She compiles key information and shares it to keep folks apprised of the complexity of vaccine distribution and of the human errors and unforeseeable events that cause people to feel vexed, as she puts it. This is the updated list of approved provider sites for Covid-19 vaccines in the Lycoming region (including Union County) as of Feb 22.  There are no additional regional vaccination sites to report on according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s map and there are several important caveats about some already-approved…
